Self Evaluation - Light, Line, & Space

Process

For this assignment, I decided to take my art in a different direction. I first tried this style on a smaller piece for my last assignment. However, I decided to experiment with it some more. I chose different bottles from the still life, isolated them, and organized them in my composition as if they were part of a collage. Overall, I enjoyed how this style came out, and I would like to experiment with this style more in the future.

Materials

I used various supplies for the Light, Line, & Space assignment to create a mixed-media piece. For the bottles and other objects, I used brown acrylic ink diluted with water. For the background of the piece, I used a mixture of acrylic ink and acrylic paint.

Struggles

Two of the struggles I found myself dealing with while working on this were the background and the tonal range of the piece. When I originally painted the background, I mixed an acrylic ink. However, after I had applied it and the ink had dried, it became extremely chalky and came off in my hands. I did not like how this changed the piece. Therefore, I decided to paint over the acrylic ink with acrylic paint. I mixed the same shade using Primary Blue, Titanium White, Burnt Umber, Phthalo Green, Dioxazine Purple, Matte Medium, and Gesso. I found the background much easier to handle, and it no longer had a chalky quality. The second issue I had with the piece was the tonal range. One of the main struggles I consistently deal with is pushing the ranges of my colors to an extreme, be it light or dark. I am pleased with how most of the bottles in this piece came out; however, I feel the bottles on the right side can have more tonal variation.
